Most of your customers open your website on a phone. Many of them are on mobile data. Some are in a metro or a market where the network is weak.
You check your website on office wifi and on a good laptop. It opens fast. You are happy.
Your customer opens it in a bus on a normal phone. It takes a long time. They see a white screen. They press back.
You never even know they came. There is no missed call. There is no message. Just a customer who went to someone else.
The good news is that a slow website can be fixed. In most cases you do not need to make a new one.
The usual reasons
- Very large photos. A photo straight from the camera is very heavy. It should be made smaller before it goes on the website.
- Too many plugins. Every plugin adds weight. Many websites have plugins that nobody uses.
- Cheap hosting. Very cheap hosting puts too many websites on one server. All of them become slow.
- Heavy animations on the first screen. They look nice in the meeting. They make the customer wait.
Mistakes to avoid
- Testing only on wifi
- Putting a video that plays on its own on the home page
- Adding a new plugin for every small feature
- Thinking that a slow website is normal
Here is how to check. Switch off wifi on your phone. Open your website on mobile data. Count the seconds till you can read the first screen.
If you can count more than three then you are losing visitors.
What to do in the next 7 days
- Day 1: Open your website on mobile data and count the seconds.
- Day 2: Ask your developer for the size of the home page and the number of plugins.
- Day 3: Make the large photos smaller. This alone helps a lot.
- Day 4 to 7: Remove what nobody uses and test the speed again.
