Here is one mistake we see very often.

The business owner pays for the website. The developer buys the domain name from the developer's own account because it is easy.

Everything works fine for two or three years.

Then one day the owner wants to change the developer. Or the developer has closed the business. Or the renewal message went to the developer's email and nobody saw it.

Now the owner finds that the domain is not in their name. They cannot move their own website. In the worst case the domain expires and someone else buys it.

Your domain name is like the name board of your shop. It should be in your name.

It takes 10 minutes to do it right.

Always do this

  1. Buy the domain from your own account. Make the account yourself on the domain seller's website.
  2. Use your own email and phone number. All renewal messages come there.
  3. Give the developer only the access they need. They can do all the work without owning the domain.
  4. Keep the renewal date in your calendar. Turn on auto renewal if you can.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using a staff member's personal email for the domain account
  • Buying for one year and forgetting about it
  • Sharing the main password on WhatsApp
  • Letting the domain expire to save a small amount

If your domain is already in someone else's account do not worry. It can be moved to your account. It is called a domain transfer and it is a normal process.

Do it now when the relations are good. Do not wait for a problem.

What to do in the next 7 days

  • Day 1: Find out in whose account your domain is.
  • Day 2: Make your own account on the domain seller's website.
  • Day 3: Ask for the domain to be moved to your account.
  • Day 4 to 7: Turn on auto renewal and put the date in your calendar.
